Post-Dispatch cuts 31 positions
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is eliminating 31 positions at the newspaper. The main departments affected will be the circulation and classified advertising phone rooms, production, purchasing, telephone operations and marketing. No newsroom jobs are affected.
Both management and non-management positions were included in the job cuts.
Kevin Mowbray, publisher of the Post-Dispatch, said in a statement that, "Although the Post-Dispatch is performing relatively well, especially compared with other metropolitan newspapers, we believe it is prudent to dial back our expenses modestly."
Mowbray said, "In St. Louis, as across the country, the advertising climate has cooled in recent months, especially for businesses related to the housing slump."
Mowbray said the staff reductions "will not affect the quality of our products or services for our customers."
Many newspapers have offered buyouts and laid off workers as print advertising revenue has dropped no fax payday advances.
Industry online advertising sales have grown rapidly, but have not fully compensated for print declines.
