Hawaii Tourism Authority launches Heritage Sites of Hawaii program
With the assistance of its Island Chapters, the Hawaii Tourism Authority has launched a Heritage Sites of Hawaii program.
HTA says the program will feature 20 roadside markers, an upgrade from the old roadside “warrior” markers that have been in place for decades.
The new markers combine the old red, brown and yellow warrior image with an additional panel that reads “Heritage Site of Hawaii.”
Visitors will be able to download a guide to all the sites, which will be available in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. Sites include the Big Island’s City of Refuge National Historical Park, Kauai’s Kilauea Lighthouse, Maui’s Iao Valley State Monument, Laānai’s Kaunoluū Village, Molokai’s Kalaupapa Lookout, and Oahu’s Queen Emma’s Summer Palace. A majority of the identified sites have interpretive signage or tours to help educate visitors about their importance and history.
