Grant fuels Upstate Transplant program
Upstate New York Transplant Services has received a federal grant to develop an organ donation awareness program with Buffalo Medical Group P.C.
The nonprofit agency received the $384,776 grant through the Division of Transplantation at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Administration. It is intended to help increase the number of individuals who formally declare their intent to donate organs and tissue and inform their families about their decision.
The project team, led by Mark Simon, UNYTS president/CEO, and Judith Tamburlin, research assistant professor at the University at Buffalo, will work with Buffalo Medical Group to utilize MyChart, the group’s electronic medical records system to communicate with patients payday loan companies. The goal is to develop a cost-effective, time efficient mechanism for physicians to educate patients about organ donation.
The grant is the 10th federal award made to UNYTS and UB to implement interventions designed to address the need to increase the rate of organ donation through education. The partners have received more competitive HRSA grant awards than any other organization of its kind nationally, with total funding of $5.5 million over the period.
Previous awards were used to develop the Donate Life Program, which boosts awareness through high school student-run public relations campaigns.
