Deloitte completes study for Capital Area Food Bank
A new study completed by Deloitte LLP for the Capital Area Food Bank pinpoints where hunger in the D.C. area is high and access to affordable food is low.
In certain areas of Prince William, Fairfax and Prince George’s counties, for example, there are a low number of agencies for the food bank to partner with to distribute food.
The Capital Area Food Bank, which distributes 25 million pounds of food to hungry locals, wants to increase that amount to 30 million pounds this coming year.
“Just to have information on targeted areas certainly enhances our work and makes it easier,” said Lynn Brantley, CEO, Capital Area Food Bank.
Deloitte presented its findings, gathered over the past year, on Friday morning at its Rosslyn offices. The pro bono study, which would have cost the D.C.-based nonprofit thousands of dollars to conduct, will help food bank leaders determine the most effective ways to increase food distribution to areas in need.
“By understanding that situation better, the food bank can strategize on how they might be able to serve those parts of the greater Washington area,” said Linda Solomon, principal, Deloitte Consulting no teletrek payday advance.
The food bank plans to boost the amount of fresh produce it dishes out by about six million pounds to 15 million this coming year.
“That is tough stuff to handle because it has to move fast. We are aiming to distribute 30 million pounds but space is an important ingredient,” said Brantley, whose organization is actively looking for more warehouse space to store food.
The study highlights the effect of migration on food distribution. As more people move to rural areas, said Solomon, putting the right distribution channels in place to serve those parts of the community is a challenge.
“As we look at what is continuing to happen within D.C., especially in Wards 7 and 8, people are beginning to move out to Prince George’s County,” said Solomon. “You are going to see more and more people living in those areas that may be in need.”
Friday marks Deloitte’s annual service day, with 3,500 Deloitte personnel volunteering at 65 projects to help D.C. area nonprofits.
